Stroll in Detail, Treasure Hunting at Antique Market

 

The first month of this year started with strolling my monthly (well, not monthly, strictly speaking, but almost monthly) visit to antique market called "Kobo Ichi" at Toji Temple in Kyoto.

 

The winter in Kyoto is very severe, not being snowy-cold-winter but being blowing-chilly-breeze-onto-your-cheek winter. This is just an excuse that I didn't bring my heavy camera with me this time of the year during my stroll. But I wanted to share some atmosphere of the market here. These photos are taken in last summer, 2012. 

 

今年初めての小旅行は、（ほぼ）毎月恒例になっている骨董市へ。京都の東寺で毎月一度開催される弘法市です。

 

京都の冬は寒さが厳しいのですが、雪が降るほど寒いという冬ではなくて、冷たい風が頬を刺すような冬といった感じ。だからというわけではないのですが、今回は重たいカメラを持って行きませんでした。いつもの雰囲気をお伝えするため、今回は昨年の夏に骨董市へ訪れたときの写真を拝借。



 

Enter the gate. Here, lots of treasures are waiting for us. Usual treasure hunters are coming from all over Kyoto and temporary hunters like me are among them. People coming to the market every month know which stall sells what, talk with stall owners (dealers) and ask for discounts.

 

重厚な門をくぐると、すでにたくさんの人が。毎月訪れる常連客から、私のように時々遊びに来るお客さんまで幅広い客層です。もちろん常連のお客さんは、どのお店が何を強味にしてどのあたりでお店を出しているのか熟知しています。常連客だからこそ、ディーラーさんとのディスカウント交渉も成り立つというもの（？）。

 

 

What you can find are from real antique treasures to what you need in your daily life. In summer, I found many kinds of linen products such as curtains, place mats, coasters, etc.

 

日常品から本当のアンティークまで、幅広い品揃えです。この写真を撮った夏には、リネン素材のものが豊富にありました。カーテンやランチョンマット、コースターなどなど。。。

 

 

Old kimono is a real catch here in the antique market. Foreign visitors are attracted to kimono products. People who open the stall for used old antique kimono fabric and make something new are amazingly creative. These cute goldfishes made of used kimono fabric are the best ever, reminding me of being a little girl enjoying the summer.

 

古い着物はやっぱり目を引きます。外国からのお客さんに大人気ですが、本物のアンティークな着物は切れ端だけでもとても高価！でも、この着物を扱っているディーラーのお店には、着物の端切れを使った想像を超えるかわいい小物が置いてありました。かわいい金魚の置物は夏にぴったりです。肌触りも、着物の生地を使っているのでとてもなめらか。

 

These are few of other real antiques. When talking with dealers, my eyes are swimming from one to another, wondering which I want to bring home with me. I bought one of these tray with foot in black this time. The condition was wonderful and the price was reasonable enough for me to buy.

 

Accroding to the dealer I talked to, this tray was used by ancient people who were in higher status. They used this kind of tray to put their meals and servants carried the tray to their masters. But I would have it as a side table in my living room. The tray with foot stands about 25cm, perfect side as a side table.

 

ここからは正真正銘、本当のアンティーク。ディーラーさんと話をしていても、目はあちこちに無造作に置いてある素敵なものたちの間をさまよい、うろうろ。自分の中で、お値段とコンディションの折り合いが付いたものの中から、この黒い高台をチョイス。

 

ディーラーさんによると、この高台はその昔、ハイソな立場にあった人が食事をするためのものだったそうです。この台の前で正座すると、食事をするのにちょうどよい高さなのです。でも私は、リビングのサイドテーブルにしようと思っています。高さが25センチくらいなので、私の思い描いていたサイドテーブル像にぴったり！

 

 

As I write this post, I can't wait to visit the market next time.
